According to multiple sources cited by mainland media, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (00388) former Managing Director and Chief China Economist, Shu-sung Ba, has recently lost contact. Sources indicate that Ba has been taken away for investigation by relevant authorities, but details of his case are not yet known. The latest information suggests that Ba was taken around March 12 by law enforcement agencies, possibly related to an illegal fundraising case led by his student. At least six months ago, Ba was restricted from leaving the country.

Reports state that Ba participated in a forum in Macau in January 2026 via video message. Additionally, financial industry insiders mentioned that on March 17 of this year, the China Banking Industry Association held an event, and Ba was listed as one of the expert participants in his role as Chief Economist of the China Banking Industry Association, but he did not appear in person that day.

Ba served as a part-time advisor before leaving HKEX

HKEX confirmed that Ba left Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing at the end of 2025, prior to which he served as a part-time advisor.

The last public appearance of Ba as Managing Director and Chief China Economist of HKEX was at the “China Opportunities Forum” held in Shanghai on October 22, 2025. During this event, he discussed changes in the global financial landscape and the strategic positioning of Hong Kong as a “super connector.”

In April 2015, HKEX established the Mainland Affairs Department and appointed Ba as Chief China Economist and Managing Director. Prior to that, Ba held positions such as Deputy Director of the Financial Research Institute at the Development Research Center of the State Council, Chief Economist of the China Banking Industry Association, member of the Hong Kong Economic Development Commission, and senior visiting scholar at Columbia Business School, University of Columbia in the United States.
