How much money actually exists in the world?
Many are fascinated by the question: what is the total amount of money in circulation worldwide? The answer is surprisingly complex. Globally, considering physical cash and bank deposits, we are talking about nearly $37 trillion. This represents the traditional monetary base—the money that actually circulates in our daily economies.
Wealth Beyond Cash
However, this figure only tells part of the story. When we consider money in the form of investments, derivatives, and cryptocurrencies, the picture expands enormously. The total value of these assets reaches approximately $1.2 quadrillion—a scale almost incomprehensible to the human mind. Breaking down physical currencies into their pure form (coins and banknotes), their global value is around $6.6 trillion.
A Broader View of Global Wealth
To understand the true scope of global wealth, economists use broader measures of the money supply, which include bank deposits and liquid assets available within the global financial systems. These values are expressed in tens of trillions of dollars, creating an interconnected and complex financial ecosystem that goes far beyond traditional cash.
But what is truly ours?
Faced with these monumental numbers, a more personal and relevant question arises: how much money is actually available to each of us? The global distribution of wealth remains deeply unequal, and understanding how these $37 trillion (and more) are distributed among the world’s population becomes crucial in addressing current economic challenges.
