According to multiple sources cited by mainland media, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (00388) former Managing Director and Chief China Economist, Ba Shusong, has recently lost contact. Sources indicate that Ba Shusong has been taken away for investigation by relevant authorities, but details of his case are not yet known. The latest information suggests that Ba Shusong was taken by authorities around March 12, possibly related to an illegal fundraising case led by his student. At least six months ago, Ba had been restricted from leaving the country.

Ba Shusong left HKEX after serving as a part-time advisor

HKEX confirmed that Ba Shusong left Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing at the end of 2025, prior to which he served as a part-time advisor.

The last public appearance of Ba Shusong was as HKEX’s Managing Director and Chief China Economist at the “China Opportunities Forum” held in Shanghai on October 22, 2025. During the event, he discussed changes in the global financial landscape and the strategic positioning of Hong Kong as a “super connector.”

HKEX established the Mainland Affairs Department in April 2015, appointing Ba Shusong as Chief China Economist and Managing Director. Prior to that, Ba Shusong served as Deputy Director of the Financial Research Institute at the Development Research Center of the State Council, Chief Economist of the China Banking Association, member of the Hong Kong Economic Development Commission, and a senior visiting scholar at Columbia Business School, among other roles.
