The Thai government plans to cut the visa-free stay period for travelers in half to 30 days.

Thai media quoted Foreign Minister Sihasak as saying that they plan to propose to the cabinet to reduce the visa-free stay for foreign travelers from 60 days to 30 days, believing that 30 days already meet most travelers’ needs. The 60-day stay period may be exploited by some individuals who are not entering for tourism purposes.

Sihasak stated that the previous 60-day visa-free policy was introduced to promote tourism development, but during a recent visit to Phuket, industry feedback indicated that some foreigners entering visa-free are involved in activities exclusive to Thai citizens and are illegally acquiring property through agents.

During efforts to combat cross-border scams, authorities also found some suspects entering with tourist visas and committing crimes during their extended stay. They believe policies need to be tightened to close these loopholes.
