A top German communications technology expert switched to Huawei this month, responsible for optical chip research and development. The German government and intelligence agencies stated that the incident could lead to the leakage of critical infrastructure technology and knowledge, posing a national security risk.

According to Handelsblatt, the expert is a physicist who previously taught at Berlin University of Technology and served as director of Fraunhofer HHI, part of the Fraunhofer Society, which specializes in fiber optics and mobile communication technology. The expert transferred to Huawei’s R&D department in Ipswich, UK, to work on optical chip research. However, the report did not mention his name.

Most of Fraunhofer HHI’s research is funded by the German government and belongs to the field of critical application technologies.

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research of Germany issued a statement saying that talent mobility between academia and industry is normal, but if it leads to the systematic exploitation of security-sensitive research results by competitors, it must be taken seriously.
