Former FBI Director and Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who was responsible for the investigation into Trump’s “Russiagate,” has passed away at the age of 81. On March 21 local time, Mueller’s family issued a statement saying, “It is with great sorrow that we announce Robert passed away last night.”

Robert Mueller served as FBI Director for 12 years and was appointed Special Counsel in May 2017 to oversee the investigation into whether Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign colluded with Russia.

Trump posted on social media in response to Mueller’s death, saying, “Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer harm innocent people.”

In July 2016, the FBI launched an investigation called “Crossfire Hurricane” into “Russiagate.” From 2017 to 2019, the U.S. Department of Justice appointed Mueller as Special Counsel to investigate whether members of Trump’s campaign colluded with the Russian government to interfere in the 2016 U.S. election. On May 15, 2023, the final report on the “Russiagate” investigation was released, and the U.S. Department of Justice concluded that there was “no actual evidence” that the FBI’s investigation into Trump’s alleged collusion with Russia was justified.

Phoenix TV’s U.S. correspondent Wang Bingru wrote that Trump’s hatred for Mueller wasn’t really about what the final report said, but because Mueller nearly destroyed his “core confidants”: campaign manager Manafort was jailed, National Security Advisor Flynn pleaded guilty, and longtime associate Stone was convicted.

The article states that for nearly two years, Trump’s camp was almost constantly under suspicion and investigation, which led Trump to repeatedly claim he was the victim of “political witch hunts.” The investigation went beyond legal issues and became a direct threat to his power. This explains why, upon hearing of Mueller’s death, Trump almost immediately celebrated on social media.
