The Korean government announced on Thursday that the number of marriages in Korea in 2025 increased by 8.1% compared to the previous year, reaching a seven-year high.

According to data from the Korea Statistics Office, a total of 240,300 marriages were registered last year, up from 222,400 in 2024, marking the third consecutive year of growth.

The 2025 statistics are similar to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, when there were 239,200 marriages. From 2020 to 2023, the number of marriages in Korea hovered around 200,000, as many couples postponed their weddings during the pandemic, with a rebound to 222,000 in 2024.

The Korea Statistics Office attributes the recent rise in marriage numbers to the growth of the population in their early 30s and the concentrated surge of marriages postponed during the pandemic.

The office also added that positive attitudes toward marriage among singles are also increasing.

In 2025, the average age at first marriage for Korean men was 33.9 years, and for women, 31.6 years. By comparison, a decade ago, the average marriage age for Korean men was 32.6 years, and for women, 30 years.

In 2025, the number of divorces in Korea decreased by 3.3% year-on-year to 88,000 cases.
