Fire at auto parts manufacturing plant in Daejeon, South Korea, results in 74 casualties, with all 14 missing persons’ bodies recovered, according to the South Korean Fire Department.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the fire broke out last Friday (the 20th) around 1:17 PM at the factory of “Safety Industrial Co., Ltd.” located in Munpyeong-dong, Daejeon. The factory employed 170 workers, of whom 14 went missing. That evening around 11 PM, firefighters found one body near the second-floor break room, and around midnight on Saturday (the 21st), nine bodies were found in the third-floor gym. The remaining four bodies were discovered gradually that afternoon. The fire caused a total of 74 casualties, including 14 deaths, 25 serious injuries, and 35 minor injuries. Among the injured are two firefighters.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has instructed relevant agencies to mobilize all available resources, including personnel and equipment, to assist in rescue efforts.

Reports cite analysis indicating that the fire spread rapidly due to the factory’s interior, which was coated with oil and dust, and dust collection systems that had accumulated sludge and grease. Additionally, the fire occurred during lunch break, with many employees staying in the second- and third-floor break areas. The thick smoke generated by the fire spread to stairwells and other main evacuation routes, hindering quick escape. Fire authorities are working with police and other agencies to investigate the exact cause of the fire.
