Kwai Chung Shooting Case | 3 Police Officers Fire 5 Shots to Subdue Knife-Wielding Man | Police: Decisive Law Enforcement
A police shooting incident occurred in Kwai Chung early in the morning. Three officers fired a total of five shots to subdue a man armed with a knife who attempted to attack them. The man was injured and sent to Queen Margaret Hospital, where he was still undergoing emergency surgery this morning.
Senior Superintendent Yao Wing-kin of the New Territories South Police District stated that the subdued man is a 43-year-old construction worker with a Hong Kong ID card, with no criminal record. The shooting took place at a distance of about 2 to 5 meters. He described the decision as difficult but necessary, praising the officers for their decisive action in apprehending someone who posed a danger to both citizens and police officers.
Yao Wing-kin said that around midnight, a citizen reported seeing a man with a strange outfit, holding a sharp knife and an iron rod, loitering around the Tsuen Wan MTR station area. Officers arrived to search but found nothing. About half an hour later, another report indicated the man was seen near Cheung Wing Road in Kwai Chung. Officers arrived again but did not find him.
Police: Only fired after no other options and proper warnings
Around 1 a.m., police received another report that the man was wandering recklessly on the Kwai Chung section of Castle Peak Road with a weapon. After verbal warnings failed, officers sprayed pepper spray at his face. The man continued to charge at officers with his weapon. One officer fired two shots, but the man did not stop his attack. Another officer fired one shot, still unable to subdue him. Subsequently, a third officer fired two more shots, and the man fell to the ground and was subdued.
The police emphasized that the use of force by officers is strictly regulated. They believed that they only fired after having no other options and after proper warnings, considering the safety of both citizens and officers. No one else was injured besides the suspect.
