Cross-Strait Marriage | Taiwan Affairs Office: Firmly Crack Down on Principal Culprits Persecuting Mainland Chinese Spouses
Taiwan People’s Party legislator Li Zhenxiu, who is married to a mainland Chinese spouse (a Taiwanese resident with mainland Chinese nationality), has not renounced her Chinese nationality and is deemed to have issues with her eligibility to run for office.
The spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, Chen Binhua, stated that the mainland strongly condemns this and will take necessary measures to protect the rights of mainland spouses, safeguarding the legitimate rights of cross-strait marriage groups, while firmly cracking down on those who arbitrarily suppress and persecute mainland spouses.
Chen Binhua pointed out that the Democratic Progressive Party authorities repeatedly manipulate issues related to the household registration of mainland spouses and their children, deliberately confusing household registration with the so-called “nationality” issue. The purpose is to suppress and persecute mainland spouses, depriving them of their legitimate rights, under the guise of the “two-state theory.”
Criticism of the DPP’s Escalation of De-Chineseization
According to reports, Taiwan’s “Chinese Culture Association” is pushing to change its name to remove the term “Chinese.” Chen Binhua criticized this move as an escalation by the DPP authorities in the cultural field to de-Chinese and manipulate “de-Chinese-ization,” which is essentially a farce aimed at severing the cultural bloodline rooted in both sides of the strait and creating a false perception that “Taiwanese culture is independent from Chinese culture.”
Chen Binhua stated that the vast Chinese civilization has a long history and profound culture. Emphasizing the continuous and unending Chinese culture is the shared spiritual homeland and spiritual lifeline of compatriots on both sides of the strait, and a solid bond that maintains national sentiment and fosters national identity.
