How do happiness and joy really come about for a person? How do you determine happiness and joy?
I believe that happiness and joy require a formula.
The formula is:
Not-too-high ability + not-too-high knowledge + not-too-high ambition + absolutely not low background + absolutely not bad luck (in education, work, marriage) + not working too hard = happiness and joy
Looking at the six items in this equation, you can compare them to your own situation. Which ones match you the most? Which ones the least? Only if you score high in all six can you be among the happiest and most joyful group. But you can be relatively happy and joyful.
As for myself: first, ability; second, knowledge. I’ll skip judging myself on those two. Third, ambition—I definitely have too much. Fourth, background—mine is definitely quite low. Fifth, luck—mine is below average, maybe even quite bad. Sixth, effort—I definitely work too hard. So my sense of happiness and joy is extremely low. So low that being alive doesn't really feel meaningful. So low that even money can’t save it.
