Upbit was hacked for 44.5 billion won, CEO apologizes and promises full compensation to users.
[Block Rhythm] There has been an incident in South Korea. On November 28, the CEO of the local largest trading platform Upbit, Wu Jingshi, publicly apologized and admitted that the platform had suffered a cyber attack.
It's a serious matter — after checking a large number of transaction records on the chain, they discovered a critical bug: the private key could actually be deduced. The vulnerability has now been patched, but the damage has already been done. The platform has urgently suspended all deposits and withdrawals while actively tracking the assets that have already been transferred out.
What is the specific amount of loss? Approximately 44.5 billion Korean Won has been lost, of which 38.6 billion belongs to users. The good news is that a portion has been recovered, with about 2.3 billion frozen, and the platform's own loss is around 5.9 billion.
Upbit has made it very clear: users' funds are fully backed by their own assets. The technical team is currently rebuilding the entire wallet system, and once the stability tests pass, the deposit and withdrawal functions will be restored immediately. This matter has also been reported to the relevant departments in South Korea, and there will be further investigations.
Once again reminds us that the security protection of centralized platforms is indeed of utmost importance.
