The market is warming up! March saw a surge in prices! NIO skyrocketed, and BYD sold over 300k units this month | New Energy Vehicle Sales Brief
China Passenger Car Association’s joint information subcommittee on the passenger vehicle market makes an initial estimate: in March, the retail market size for “narrow” passenger cars is about 1.7 million units, up 64.5% month over month, but down 12.4% year over year. Of this, the retailer sales volume for new energy vehicles is expected to be around 900k units, with a penetration rate of about 52.9%.
Multiple new-energy vehicle models will be launched and released one after another within the year. The heat in the new-energy market is expected to rebound, but from technology releases to pre-sales and then to deliveries, there is still a certain time lag; this incremental volume is difficult to reflect in March’s terminal market performance. However, based on the March sales data disclosed by automakers, the market is rebounding: NIO, Deepal, Zeekr, Li Auto, and others have all achieved year-over-year and month-over-month growth in sales.
BYD: Single-month sales exceed 300k units
In March, BYD sold 300,222 vehicles, earning the top spot in sales among Chinese automakers. Overseas sales of passenger cars and pickups were 119,591 units. Cumulative sales of new energy vehicles exceeded 15.8 million units. From March 2 to March 8, as BYD held a disruptive technology launch event titled “Flash Charging China, Changes the World,” it formally announced that new energy vehicles have entered the “flash charging era.” Weekly order volume surged to 44,660 units, and in Week 11 it further rose to 47,200 units.

Orders for the Li Auto i8 have also grown steadily, with a month-over-month increase of more than 100% in March.
