Qatar’s main liquefied natural gas (LNG) production base, Ras Laffan Industrial City, was heavily damaged by an attack from Iran, with predictions that countries in Asia such as South Korea may face severe LNG supply disruptions.

Ras Laffan Industrial City is a large industrial area located about 80 kilometers north of Doha, the capital of Qatar. It is a core facility for processing natural gas from the “North Field,” one of the world’s largest gas fields. The damage to this area has led to a 17% decrease in Qatar’s LNG export capacity, which is expected to worsen instability in the international natural gas market.

The Blue House stated that, due to the unstable situation in the Middle East causing supply issues for naphtha, a key raw material for the petrochemical industry, they are studying additional measures to stabilize the industrial supply chain. The government explained that to stabilize the supply and demand of naphtha, they are preparing export management strategies, including minimizing overseas losses, and are working closely with industry to support the introduction of alternative raw materials.

Experts believe that this incident may increase pressure on LNG prices, and that energy supply and demand issues in Asian countries will be difficult to resolve in the short term. This situation could further increase volatility in the international energy market in the future, requiring strategic energy management by governments worldwide.
