256 ETH for Encrypted Messaging: Vitalik Defends Privacy and Ethereum’s Future
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has once again demonstrated that privacy and decentralization are more than just buzzwords for him. This time, he donated a total of 256 ETH (worth over $420,000) to support two encrypted messaging apps – Signal and SimpleX Chat. Each project received 128 ETH, a number that also carries symbolic weight: a perfect binary number appreciated by the crypto community.
Metadata Privacy Comes First Buterin explained that he chose to support these projects because of their approach to metadata privacy. It’s not just about end-to-end encryption anymore – it’s about hiding who you’re talking to, when, and how often. 🔹 SimpleX Chat operates via one-way message queues with no global identifiers. 🔹 Session, another app in the space, uses a decentralized network of service nodes instead of centralized servers. This makes such tools especially attractive for users who care deeply about privacy in a world increasingly driven by mass surveillance and data mining.
Vitalik: Messaging Apps Still Have a Long Way to Go However, Vitalik also acknowledged that these apps are not yet perfect. True metadata protection, he said, depends on decentralization, which is challenging to implement, especially when users demand multi-device access. “Resistance to Sybil and DoS attacks – both on the message-routing network and user side (without requiring phone number verification) – adds another layer of complexity. These issues deserve more attention,” said Buterin. One user on X (formerly Twitter) noted that the 128 ETH donation was “on-brand” for Vitalik, adding that while the number might seem arbitrary, in binary terms it’s perfect – almost like he’s saying this is a structural investment in privacy, not a performative one. Other users praised Vitalik’s commitment to metadata privacy and permissionless onboarding, with one noting “Huge respect for supporting the hardest parts of private messaging that most people ignore. Encryption is easy – metadata protection and permissionless access are the real boss fights.”
Signal Expands – but Faces Real Threats Signal recently launched secure backups for iOS and Android. Each backup is encrypted with a 64-digit key that cannot be recovered if lost – a testament to their strong commitment to security. However, Signal has also become a target of a new generation of Android malware, according to cybersecurity firm ThreatFabric. The emerging banking trojan doesn’t break encryption itself, but captures decrypted messages once they appear on the user’s screen. This shows that even the most secure systems can be vulnerable if the end-user device is compromised – a reminder that privacy is a full-stack challenge.
Ethereum’s Future: Selective Scaling Ahead Vitalik also shared fresh thoughts on Ethereum’s roadmap. He noted that Ethereum will shift from broad, general-purpose scaling to targeted, goal-oriented optimization in 2026. For example, he mentioned plans to increase the block gas limit fivefold, while also introducing higher gas fees for inefficient transactions. The idea is to enhance network scalability while encouraging smarter resource usage. Some of the proposed changes include: 🔹 Higher gas for SSTORE when opening new storage slots
🔹 Optimizing calldata and precompiled contracts
🔹 Adjusting the cost of complex arithmetic operations With these changes, Ethereum aims to scale smartly, not just quickly. And while Buterin invests in tools that push privacy forward, he also continues to shape Ethereum’s long-term architecture for a more efficient, decentralized future.
