Hungary and Slovakia signed an agreement on the 16th to build a new oil pipeline for the transfer of gasoline and diesel between the two countries. On the same day, Slovak Prime Minister Fico said the decision by Ukraine to cut off supplies of Russian oil is “unilateral and harmful,” and the Slovak government cannot accept it. Zijaldó Péter, Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations, released a video after attending a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, on the 16th. He said that earlier that day, he and Slovak Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Denisa Šaková signed an agreement to build a new oil pipeline connecting Bratislava, the Slovak capital, and the Saszhauroln refinery in central Hungary.

According to information, the new pipeline will be 127 kilometers long in total, with an annual transport capacity of up to 1.5 million tons. It can transport refined products such as diesel and gasoline, and is expected to be completed in the first half of 2027.

According to a report by the Slovak news agency, Fico, in a phone call on the 16th with the President of the European Council, Kostaon, said that Slovakia cannot accept Ukraine’s decision to stop transporting Russian oil via the “Friendship” pipeline. He said Slovakia hopes the EU will put pressure on Ukraine to restore oil supplies.

Fico also said the EU should not place Ukraine’s interests above the interests of EU member states such as Slovakia or Hungary. Russian oil transported to Europe via the “Friendship” pipeline’s Ukraine segment has been suspended since January 27. Hungary and Slovakia have expressed dissatisfaction and will hold Ukraine responsible.

The “Friendship” oil pipeline is a large pipeline network system for Russia to deliver crude oil to Central and Eastern Europe. The starting point is located in Russia’s southwestern Samara Oblast; the northern line goes via Belarus to Poland and Germany, and the southern line goes via Ukraine to the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary.
