On the morning of March 26, with the launch command issued, the staff pressed the start switch on the control panel, and the “Wanmei Electric Power” shield machine began tunneling, marking the start of the construction of the 500 kV GIL (Gas Insulated Transmission Line) pipe gallery project located in Wuhu, Anhui, creating favorable conditions for the Gansu-Zhejiang ±800 kV UHVDC transmission project to cross the Yangtze River. The Gansu-Zhejiang ±800 kV UHVDC transmission project is a key project in the national “14th Five-Year” power development plan, with a total length of 2,370 kilometers and an annual transmission capacity of 36 billion kilowatt-hours, of which green energy accounts for more than 50%. When the project crosses the Yangtze River in Wuhu, Anhui, due to corridor restrictions, it is necessary to occupy the space of the existing 500 kV transmission line. To this end, the State Grid is simultaneously constructing the GIL pipe gallery, relocating the existing line underground to free up space for the project. According to Sun Minggang, the project execution manager of the owner, State Grid Anhui Electric Power Construction Company, the shield section of the pipe gallery is 3,554.4 meters long, with a maximum burial depth of 53.85 meters, using a mud balance shield machine for construction, with a cutter head excavation diameter of 12.13 meters. The project faces challenges such as ultra-shallow cover start, tunneling through water-rich sandy layers, and long-distance crossing of composite strata, and will traverse various soft upper and hard lower composite strata, including silty clay, fine sand, gravel, and moderately weathered limestone. A relevant person in charge of the State Grid Anhui Electric Power Construction Department stated that through the three-dimensional construction mode of “old lines underground and new lines utilizing the upper space,” it not only achieves efficient utilization of the limited channel resources along the Yangtze River but also minimizes the impact on the Yangtze River shipping channel.
